Simplified Dubai Visa Extensions 2026: How to Stay Longer Without Leaving UAE

If you are currently enjoying everything Dubai has to offer and realize a 30-day or 60-day visa simply isn't enough time, you aren't alone. Extending your stay in the UAE is one of the most common immigration requests.
However, the rules surrounding visit visa extensions change frequently. In the past, the infamous "Oman border run" (exiting the country by bus to Oman and immediately re-entering on a new visa) was the standard procedure.
For 2026, the UAE immigration authorities (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security - ICP, and the GDRFA in Dubai) have streamlined the process, making in-country visa extensions the preferred, faster, and much simpler option.
Can I Extend My Tourist Visa Without Leaving Dubai?
Yes. In 2026, the vast majority of standard 30-day and 60-day single-entry pre-paid tourist visas can be extended while you remain inside the UAE.
You no longer have to exit the country via an Oman bus run or an "A-to-A" (Airport-to-Airport) flight to a neighboring Gulf state to get a new visa, although those options do still exist for specific visa categories.
The In-Country Visa Extension Rules (2026)
If you hold a standard tourist visa (typically sponsored by a travel agency, airline, or hotel), the rules for extending it from within the UAE are clear:
- Maximum Extension: You can generally extend a 30-day or 60-day tourist visa for an additional 30 days.
- Number of Extensions: Most standard tourist visas can be extended twice from within the country (meaning a maximum total stay of 90 to 120 days depending on the initial visa type).
- Timing is Critical: You must apply for the extension before your current visa expires. Applying on the last day is risky. We recommend applying at least 3 to 5 days before expiration.
- Overstay Fines: If your visa expires before the extension is approved, you will accrue an overstay fine of AED 50 per day.
How Much Does an Inside-Country Extension Cost?
While an in-country extension saves you the cost and hassle of an international flight or a long bus ride to Oman, the physical extension fee is slightly higher than applying for a brand-new visa from outside the country.
- Standard 30-Day In-Country Extension: Expect to pay approximately AED 850 to AED 1,100.
Why the variation? You must process the extension through the same entity that sponsored your original visa (e.g., your travel agency or airline). Agencies charge varying service and typing fees on top of the base government fee.
Step-by-Step Extension Process
The fastest way to extend your visa is digitally. Do not go to the airport immigration desk.
Step 1: Contact Your Original Sponsor
Look at your current eVisa PDF. At the bottom, it will list the "Sponsor Name." If you entered via a travel agency package, you must contact that specific agency. If you entered via Emirates Airlines, you must process the extension through VFS Global or the airline's portal.
Step 2: Submit Passport Copies
Your sponsor will request a clear copy of your passport and your current tourist visa.
Step 3: Pay the Extension Fee
You will pay the agency online or via payment links. Because you are inside the country, the agency must pay a specific "status change" or "inside country" premium to the GDRFA/ICP.
Step 4: Receive the Extended Visa
The extension is usually processed within 1 to 3 working days (often faster). You will receive a new digital visa document with the updated expiry date. You do not need a new stamp in your physical passport.
What if I Have a Visa-On-Arrival?
If you are a citizen of a country eligible for a Visa-On-Arrival (e.g., UK, US, EU, Australia), the rules differ slightly:
- 30-Day Visa-On-Arrival Holders: You can extend your stay for a one-time fee, typically giving you an additional 30 days. You do this via an Amer Center in Dubai or the GDRFA app.
- 90-Day Visa-On-Arrival Holders: These are generally multi-entry visas valid for 6 months. Once the 90 days are consumed, you typically cannot extend them from within the country. You must exit the UAE and wait for the reset period (often another 90 days) before re-entering on a tourist basis.
